We are not obliged to be aware of everything. Consciousness is not a floodlight but a flashlight in the dark: it lights up only part of what is happening. This is not a flaw; it is a way of surviving. In each moment we notice only what has become available, and that is enough to keep us from being completely captured by automatism.
Emotions matter. They point, inform, remind. But they do not command. We can hear that right now we feel anxious, ashamed or hurt, and still not give these feelings the right to act in our name. A thought can arise without becoming a decision. An emotion can be strong without becoming a direction.
We are always a little biased. The influence of the body, of past experience, of society is unavoidable. Millions of micro-impulses nudge us toward one action or another, often before we have had time to think. Complete neutrality does not exist, and perhaps is not needed.
But we have a window. Sometimes it is barely noticeable: a pause, half a second, a microscopic gap between “felt” and “did.” And if in that moment we manage to stop, not necessarily to understand everything, not necessarily to control everything, only to notice what is happening, that is already enough.
Freedom is not about being above our feelings, but about not being wholly them.
